In 1993 the actor Bernard Hill created a rare character in a three-part drama by Edward Bond for BBC tv, Olly’s Jail, directed by Roy Battersby.
The work’s lengthy opening scene pits Hill’s character Mike towards a silent daughter, brilliantly performed by Charlotte Coleman, whom he ultimately kills over her refusal to drink a cup of tea. The drama as an entire addresses profound problems with justice, household and morality, held collectively by Hill’s troubled and enigmatic Everyman.
