Serra was born in 1938 in San Francisco. The son of a shipyard pipe-fitter, he grew up watching huge metal tankers come and go. As a younger man he labored in native metal mills to pay for school in California, and went on to review positive artwork at Yale. He moved to New York within the mid-Nineteen Sixties, the place he started making artwork from industrial supplies, particularly steel. “I began as a child within the metal mills,” the artist advised NPR in 1986. “And in some sense I’ve by no means left.”
