A South Carolina matriarch is being remembered this week for her unwavering dedication to tackle builders and protect traditionally vital land. She impressed celebrities and raised consciousness for Gullah Geechee folks. South Carolina Public Radio’s Victoria Hansen has this remembrance of Josephine Wright.

VICTORIA HANSEN, BYLINE: Ninety-four-year-old Josephine Wright simply wished to reside in peace on her late husband’s household land when bulldozers started to encompass the picturesque property on Hilton Head Island. She had turned down a suggestion for the land years earlier and thought nothing of it. Then, final February, the great-great-grandmother was served with a lawsuit. JOSEPHINE WRIGHT: It puzzled me at first, however then it bought me indignant.

HANSEN: Wright bought so indignant, she fought again and employed a civil rights lawyer. The land has been within the household for the reason that Civil Warfare, bought by an ancestor free of slavery. HANSEN: Wright died Sunday because the battle over her property drags on in courtroom. However those that have fought to save lots of the quickly disappearing land and tradition of the direct descendants of enslaved Africans say they now have an ally in Wright’s legacy.
