I had the pleasure on quite a lot of events of directing Gudrun Ure on BBC radio, most memorably as a superbly nuanced and sharp-tongued Miss Jean Brodie, whom she admired as “a lady of unbiased thoughts”. This was felicitous casting in that, as she instructed us throughout rehearsals, her dad and mom had chosen to call her after the liberated Gudrun in DH Lawrence’s Girls in Love.
