My mom, Sheila Scott, who has died aged 74, was chief government of the Nationwide Care Affiliation (NCA) for 26 years. She will probably be remembered for her inspiring management at a time of giant progress within the sector as group care was being expanded.
In 1987 she was appointed chief government of the NCA, which represents small and medium-sized suppliers. She served on a number of authorities taskforces, together with one which oversaw the implementation of the 1993 group care reforms to maneuver folks out of long-stay hospital wards. In 2007 she was appointed OBE.
Sheila grew up in Gorefield, Cambridgeshire, on a farm along with her dad and mom, Audrey (nee Louth) and George (referred to as Invoice) Brownlow and her youthful siblings, Anne and Raymond. She liked life within the Fens and talked significantly fondly of the tomato greenhouse on the farm and the odor that she would without end keep in mind.
After schooling at Wisbech highschool for ladies (now Wisbech grammar college), Sheila moved to Cambridge to qualify as a registered nurse at Addenbrooke’s hospital. Nursing took her to London, the place she met Alan Scott, whom she married in 1972, and constructed up a profitable nursing home-based business.
Sheila was dedicated to politics and to the Conservative social gathering, serving as a councillor for a few years in Barnet, north London, and later in Peterborough. In London her native MP was Margaret Thatcher, who turned an excellent inspiration. Sheila stood unsuccessfully in Stoke-on-Trent South within the 1997 common election, and subsequently turned an advocate for, and mentor of, different girls searching for workplace. Not a couple of who’ve since achieved positions of authority owe her a debt of gratitude.
She was a proud and lively member of Soroptimist Worldwide, the worldwide volunteer service and advocacy organisation for girls’s rights and gender equality, in each Peterborough and in Richmond, Virginia, after she moved to the US in 2021 to reside near me and my household.
Sheila and Alan divorced amicably in 1996. She is survived by my brother James and me, her grandchildren, Chloe, Cameron and Cecilia, and her siblings, Anne and Raymond.
