Crouching below his college desk as he had been instructed, Thomas Neff listened to the sirens wailing. This was a nuclear-attack drill, aka “duck and canopy”. The enormous menace of the Soviet Union was a continuing in these days. All by way of grade college and highschool he had these drills. However Portland, Oregon, was a distant, blue-collar place again then, and he was only a trainer’s son who was completely satisfied to earn additional nickels by choosing strawberries and beans. Why would the Soviets assault him, and the way might it do any good to cover below his desk?
