My buddy Harry Brockway, who has died of most cancers aged 65, was an artist specialising in wooden engraving, sculpture, letter chopping and architectural stone carving.

For a few years, he collaborated with me and my staff on the Bathtub workshop of Cliveden Conservation, the place his ability and dedication elevated our tasks. Our statuary and fountains at Castletown Cox in Kilkenny, Eire, received the Stone Federation of Nice Britain craftsmanship award in 2004; we received the award once more, in 2010, for the marble chimney items we made for a Quinlan Terry designed home in Regent’s Park, central London.

Born and introduced up in Newport, south Wales, he got here from a proficient household: his mom, Diana (nee Libby), was an artwork trainer and quilter, his father, John, an Olympic swimmer. Like his father, Harry spent many hours throughout his teenage years trawling up and down the native baths. However his future lay elsewhere. At Kingston he met Rose Willy, whom he married in 1985.

Additional programs in stonemasonry and letter chopping helped safe him a job restoring Wells Cathedral, a key early Gothic constructing. He later joined the workshop of Mel Morris Jones, with whom he labored on a dozen large capitals (the ornamental tops of columns) for a temple in Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire, and elaborate stone vases and urns for Petworth Home in West Sussex.

Harry grew to become self-employed in 1988, shortly earlier than shifting to Glastonbury, Somerset, the place he and Rose had two daughters, Florence and Elsie. He labored from a workshop on the backside of his backyard, full of presses for printing his engravings and easels for engaged on stone slabs. He would chip or carve there every morning, his radio all the time set to BBC Radio 3, earlier than taking his every day stroll up Glastonbury Tor.

Throughout this time, in addition to working with me and my staff on tasks, he designed memorials for the Lettering Arts Belief and taught wood-engraving programs at West Dean School in Sussex for a decade. The Stonecarver, 2004, a wooden engraving self-portrait by Harry Brockway, depicting his restoration of the King’s Fountain at Linlithgow Palace in Scotland

Harry produced his sturdy figurative work with nice ease. The Stonecarver, a wooden engraving self-portrait from 2004, depicts him restoring the Sixteenth-century King’s Fountain at Linlithgow Palace for Historic Scotland. I bear in mind him like this, wrapped up in ear defenders and masks, surrounded by the instruments of his commerce: an air hammer, a mallet and chisels, a precariously balanced cup of tea.

He continued to work creatively till the tip of his life.

Harry is survived by Rose, Florence and Elsie.
